A Bird's Life @ SCOTTY

Series of events, organised by Juliane Zelwies 11th and 12th of November 2022

SCOTTY is pleased to invite you to a series of events which explore and reflect upon human behaviour with regards to our interaction with animals, and especially with regards to wild birds through artistic practices.

The Morgenvogel Real Estate project places emphasis on nature conservation, and in particular on bird conservation. The Finnish artist Maria Leena Räihälä and the German writer Manuel Bonik use different artistic media, work in and about the great outdoors as for example in their project M0RE for which they built more than a thousand nesting boxes which were then distributed and permanently installed in the city of Berlin.

On Friday, 11th of November 2022, at 7 pm Morgenvogel Real Estate invites to BIRDTALKs, where Claudia Wegworth (bird-activist, BUND), Juliane Zelwies (artist, curator) Maria and Manuel (MVRE) and Wolfgang Müller (author, artist) will speak about different aspects of birdlife. The audience is very welcome to contribute and participate with their experiences and stories.

On Saturday, 12th of November 2022, from 12 noon – 5 pm Morgenvogel Real Estate invites interested visitors to build nesting boxes which will be mounted in the surroundings of SCOTTY afterwards.

Subsequently, from 5:30 pm onwards, Canadian artists Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens will speak about a selection of recent works that deal with notions of interspecies communication and cohabitation and will focus on a series of videos entitled The Violence of Care. Connecting the zoo, the field station, the conservation center, and the backyard, the videos present human practices that try to create the conditions for avian lives to thrive, or, at times, simply to be sustained.

The filmmaker Lilli Kuschel is going to end the evening with her lecture "observing observers observing – filming birds". She will speak about her experiences while working on her most recent experimental documentary film CROWS which made her observe large crow colonies in the constantly changing urban cityscape of Berlin.

About the invited artists and their projects:

Morgenvogel Real Estate has been founded by Maria Leena Räihälä and Manuel Bonik in 2007. Morgenvogel Real Estate is a project which presents itself in different forms, for example as an art space, as a Morgenvogel-church, as a series of BIRD TALKS or as the campaign BIG SISTER. The project M0RE brought more than 1000 birdhouses to Berlin. In 2015 the artist book Morgenvogel Real Estate (supported by Kulturverwaltung des Berliner Senats and gegenstalt Verlag, Berlin) was published.

Maria Leena Räihälä works with drawings, animations and interventions. Manuel Bonik is a writer and musician. Both live in Berlin and Keihärinkoski.

Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens work chiefly in sculpture, video, and installation. Their collaborative practice explores issues at the intersection of ethics, epistemology, and the history of science and is concerned with questions related to procedures of measurement, classification and representation.

Lilli Kuschel is an artist, filmmaker and camerawoman. She researches urban ecologies, the „More-than-human“ and cohabitation at the University of Arts Berlin, where she teaches experimental film and media art.

Veranstaltungsreihe, organisiert von Juliane Zelwies 11. und 12. November 2022
